Today, we’ll be discussing the importance of checking references. In the music industry or any industry where you’re collaborating with others.
In this blog, I will share a personal story about my experience with a producer I met in high school.
The Importance of Checking References

It’s important to check references when you’re collaborating in the music industry.
This ensures that you’re working with someone who is reliable, professional, and trustworthy.
A Personal Story
I was making music and didn’t know much about the business side of things. Another producer heard my beats and asked me to be his production partner.
I agreed to become a production team with him.
We sold beats and went to meetings together. We never actually sat down and worked together in the studio.
Over time, I began to notice that every single beat this person made was good.
I thought my own music was okay, but this person seemed to be able to make amazing beats all the time. His music impressed me and I thought we made a great team.

But, after a year of working together, I received a phone call from someone we had sold beats to.
He said that he knew I wasn’t actually making the beats. He showed me a song online by a different producer that was the exact same beat we had sold.
The customer believed we weren’t actually making the beats we were selling. He thought we were buying them from another producer and marking them up.
This shocked us and we denied the accusation.
After some time to think about it. I realized that I had never seen the producer I worked with make a beat.

It was at this point that I realized my production partner deceived.
I had trusted them and didn’t take the time to verify their credibility or check references.
I found out the producer I was working with never made any beats. He was stealing them from a website online the whole time smh.
The Consequences of Not Checking References
This experience taught me the importance of checking references. Ensuring that you’re working with someone who is reliable and honest should be a priority.
checking references can avoid situations like this altogether.
Don’t let yourself fall victim to a scam or fraudulent activity.

Protect your career and your reputation. By checking references and verifying the credibility of those you work with. It may take a little extra time and effort, but it’s worth it, in the long run.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, checking references is crucial in any industry, but especially in the music industry where collaborations are common. Make sure to do your due diligence and ensure that you’re working with someone who is reliable, professional, and trustworthy.
